September is suicide prevention month.
Prevention is a shared responsibility that requires society`s undivided attention. According to the World Health Organization, in 2021 more than 700,000 people commit suicide each year and represents the fourth cause of death in the world in the age group of 15 to 29 years.
Millions of people around the world struggle with suicidal thoughts, and it is essential that we are willing to offer support and resources to help those who so need it.
Here are some important factors which can make a difference:
1.Listen and Communicate: Empathy and active listening are crucial. Asking someone how they feel and being willing to listen without judging, can open doors for dialogue, sometimes people just want to be heard.
2. Awareness of Danger Signs: Learning to recognize danger signs, such as drastic changes in behavior or the expression of feelings of hopelessness, is essential to intervene in time and be vigilant.
3. Mental Health Promotion: This includes reducing the stigma around mental disorders and encouraging no shame help-seeking.
4.Suicide Awareness: Suicide Awareness in schools and in the community can increase awareness and understanding, which can save lives, especially talking about this issue openly.
5. Post-Suicide Support: After a suicide attempt or passing by suicide, ongoing support is crucial to the recovery of those affected.
Remember, suicide prevention is a collective effort. We can all make a difference by being understanding, informed, and willing to help those who are struggling with suicidal thoughts.
