The recent triumph of Robson Conceicao on his fourth attempt, has sent ripples of inspiration cascading over others who have fallen short, but are determined to persevere in their determined quests, fuelled by blood, sweat and tears, to finally win the coveted and cherished Green and Gold Belt.
Ronald Gavril is just such a man. Undeterred, undaunted, unabashed and convinced that he indeed can achieve his golden goal, he is prepared to once climb the mountain with all the grinding effort it entails, to gain the rare opportunity to reach its peak. Asked how he`s going to carve out his opportunity, his replay is simple and direct: ”The way to get there and gain that chance is to WIN, WIN and WIN!”
Thus far it`s been a long and winding road for Ronald. Born in Bacau, Romania thirty seven years ago, inspired by his two brothers he joined the local boxing club and took to it like a duck to water. A stellar 165-15 amateur career, winning ten national titles and a successful run with Romania`s National Team.
He turned pro in 2011, at the relatively late age of twenty-five, but his talent has shone through, as he`s built a career of 25-3, 20 KO`s. To achieve it, he packed his bags with just a dollar or two in his pocket and he moved lock, stock and barrel to the United States, not knowing one word of English, he resolved to teach himself and now he`s fluent. First, he went to Los Angeles and then moved to Boxing`s epicenter of Las Vegas. Here the keen and discerning eye of Floyd Mayweather noticed him in the Mayweather gym, as he was sparring with gusto, hunger and also talent. He signed on the dotted line for Mayweather Promotions, providing punctuation via an array of full stops.
Ronald`s breakthrough came in winning the NABF super-middleweight title, with a tenth round TKO of Christopher Brocker. He persevered, to knock down Christopher twice in the tenth. The supreme challenge ensued, as the WBC title became vacant and it was to be contested by David Benavidez and Anthony Dirrell. Anthony suffered a training injury and opportunity knocked. So Ronald promptly answered and it opened doors, to another portal dimension. In a titanic give and take fight, Ronald fought his heart out and knocked young David down in the final round, but lost a SD. This earned him an immediate rematch which he lost by UD.
He`s fought on, convinced he can and he will get a third opportunity to capitalise upon.
Of all the gin joints in the world, instead… he chose Sport and Chips in Mexico City`s Coyocan neighbourhood, an elegant and enticing setting for Martes A Cafe. Immaculately attired in a cream suit complimented by an elegant coffee coloured tie, reminiscent of Victor Lazlo in Casablanca. Resplendent, he sat on the podium next to WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, praising Robson and stressing that Robson`s triumph at the fourth attempt, has inspired him to fight on to earn his place in Green and Gold history. On that dais, he made his intention clear to once again roll the dice, in search of achieving a lifelong dream.
Ronald explains the origins of his punching power were built and honed, working with his hands, putting his back into it, on his Parents` farm, so by the time he arrived at the boxing gym: ”I was already a strong kid. In life you have to work hard for everything. It instills fire and ambition for gaining success.
”When I fought David Benavides, I showed him who I am and my power. I think I won the first fight, and then I got the rematch. In so doing, I gained a lot of experience and now I want to fight the top guy in my division. For everyone it is a dream to fight a great champion. It would be tremendous to fight Saul ”Canelo” Alvarez, who is destined for the Hall of Fame. The key for an opportunity is working hard, plus winning, winning and then winning. To win the championship would be the fulfilment of a dream and to give back to my community. I Know I possess the power, skills, knowledge and experience to win all my upcoming fights.
”Robson is my inspiration. It took him four challenges to get there. I too will never give up in my aim to become champion…and it will be!”
