Christian Mbilli, who was elevated from WBC Interim super middleweight Champion to Absolute Champion at Martes a Cafe, had an urgent priority….To phone Mum with the news.
The Mum who’s not exactly an avid boxing fan, and like all Mums, frets and fears every time Christian steps into the ring. But the Mum who will be as proud as punch that Her Son has realized and accomplished his childhood dream to get to the top of the Noble Art. As James Cagney once said: “Top of the world Ma!”
A thrilling moment for Christian, as he was presented with the famous and fabled Green and Gold belt and a championship signet ring by World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman at top table in the sumptuous Sports and Chips, Coyoacan, Mexico City, who said to him: “You have a bright future and to look forward to many years of success.”
Christian himself was brimming with pride. With shining eyes which was slightly glistening, he said: “For me it’s been so much work which I have put in, to make my dream come true. It is a wonderful day. I’m going to enjoy this day, but then sit down with my team to plan how we can defend the World Title.”
And Christian is all to happy to take on the Mexican Tidal Wave Onslaught. He smiled: “Canelo and Munguia are very good fighters, in the top three. I will be very proud to fight them. Maybe we can put a big fight together? Now I’m the guy who everyone wants to fight as I am the world champion. I’m ready for big fights. I am truly ready for everything.”
Twenty four of Christian’s twenty nine fights have been KO wins. Rather than just natural power he puts it down to pressure and sheer punch volume that he exerts and inflict. He also learned a lot fighting Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Lester, neither of which he managed to stop, but respectively defeated and drew with.
Christian said: “I am working with my team to change and to improve some technical aspects and I have learned a lot from these two fights.”
Christian says the greatest day for his Mum will be when he announces his retirement, as she worries. He says: “No mother likes to see their child taking punches: “Although she is proud of me, It is very difficult for her to see me in the ring.”
