World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Kenyan Fatuma Zarika (32-12-2, 17 Ko’s), 34, conquered the world crown in October 2016 by defeating the elegant Jamaican southpaw Alicia Ashley, becoming the first boxer from Kenya to conquer a WBC world belt.
The champion, a single mother of two daughters, interrupted her studies at age 16 to help her mother in household chores. At that moment she realized that she had to do something to radically change her life.
She began training boxing at age 19 in an improvised gym, working tirelessly until becoming a professional in 2000.
“Winning the WBC belt changed my life. I was at the lowest point mentally and winning was the way God asked me not to give up, ” Fatuma said.
Next week she will face up to another exacting challenge in her successful career, when faces the dangerous Mexican Yamileth Mercado in a rematch.
The fight will be held at the home of the challenger at the Poliforum of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. The fight is expected to be an absolute thriller, as the fight they held in 2018, was ranked as one of the best of the year.
