Californian Sebastián “La Torre del Infierno” Fundora, conquered the interim super welterweight title of the World Boxing Council, by defeating the experienced Erickson “Hammer” Lubin (24-2, 17 knockouts) by technical knockout concluding the ninth round, this Saturday night at the Virgin Hotels Theater in Las Vegas, Nevada.
As expected, it was a spectacular fight with thrills and spills. Southpaw Fundora who towers over everyone else in this division stands six feet five and a half inches tall, with an eighty inch reach. While Lubin who`s also a southpaw is five feet nine and has a seventy four and a half inch reach.
Fundora dropped Lubin in the second round with an upending right uppercut and shortly thereafter the bell rang. Suprisingly, most of the time Fundora didn`t use his considerable height and reach advantage, standing toe to toe with Lubin, getting a bloody nose. Yet in the to and fro, give and take, Lubin dropped Fundora in the seventh round in an onslaught, with a series of pinpoint hooks. Fundora went down on a knee and looked shaky for the rest of the round. It was a fantastic fight, and the taller man was getting the better of it. Lubin`s eyes started to swell badly, his mouth was open and bleeding. The fight was stopped by Lubin’s corner after the ninth, advising Referee Russell Mora, due to the punishment he was receiving and suffering, which was beginning to affect his vision. Just before the bell a long looping left hook swiveled his head. Enough was enough!
Lubin was ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage, but his corner decided to stop the fight, putting his well being first.
With this victory, the young Fundora raises his record to a lofty 19-0-1, 13 KOs, while Lubin is now 24-2, 17 KOs. It was a thrilling, pulsating and dramatic slugfest, highly worthy of the Green and Gold glittering Interim prize!
