Automatic fines for safety weigh-ins noncompliance to be enforced effective august 2024. This, along with other measures, will make up the WMP 2.0 with an aggressive campaign of the dangers of everything that has to do with weight and boxers.
Weight is the most important element in our sport, it is the basis of boxing with weight categories marking the limits in which boxers shall compete.
The WBC has worked diligently throughout out the years to attend in many ways all matters related to weight and has implemented a variety of actions with the objective to reduce as much as possible the risk of every fighter that goes into the ring. Some of these actions are:
– Creation of intermediate weight categories from the original 8 to the current 18 divisions to limit as much as possible the advantages of either fighter.
– Implementation of the safety weigh-ins 30, 14 and 7 days before the fight with a maximum percentage of 10,5 and 3%.
– Monitoring of the difference between the official weight versus the weight upon arrival in the arena.
– Introduction of WBC BoxMed which is an app for Apple and Android for individual profiles of each boxer with a wide variety of features that will enhance the fighter’s safety and protection.
Weight reduction techniques can be extremely dangerous. Dehydration is a mortal condition that can put the fighter’s well-being and even life at risk.
There are many techniques that are irresponsible and even illegal. We invite the boxing Community to join forces and begin a process to attend this important problem altogether. Promoters, managers, matchmakers, trainers, fitness coaches, nutritionists and anyone involved in a fighter’s career must join forces to eradicate dangerous practices.
The WBC will be circulating a guide which defines safe as well as dangerous practices of weight cutting.
