The word of the month at the World Boxing Council is “strength,” and under that concept the most recent WBC University Masterclass was held, led by President Mauricio Sulaimán, and the Chairman of the WBC Ring Officials Committee, Duane Ford.
The session was introduced by Christiane Manzur, head of WBC Cares, who presented the meaning of the word of the month as the central theme for institutional reflection. From there, Mauricio Sulaimán delivered remarks focused on unity within boxing amid a complex global landscape.
“The WBC is the home of boxers. It doesn’t matter if they are amateur, Olympic, professional, or retired — at the WBC we take care of boxers,” he stated, underscoring the organization’s philosophy.
On the technical side, the Masterclass delved into key aspects of a judge’s role: scoring criteria in a bout, the assessment of effective punching, ring generalship, and the concept of enhanced scoring. It also addressed one of the less visible dimensions of professional boxing — the emotional pressure a judge faces when their scorecard differs from the others.
Duane Ford contributed perspective from his officiating experience, explaining how a scorecard is built round by round and which elements must prevail in the objective evaluation of a fight.
The session concluded with a Q&A segment, during which attendees were able to pose questions directly to the leaders, reinforcing the academic and educational nature of the event.
