We closed this week of our traditional WBC Talks with the first WBC woman world champion Jackie Nava.
Originally from Tijuana Baja California Mexico, Jackie says that she started late in boxing, because at the age of 12 she got into karate, then practiced kickboxing and finally in 2001 got into boxing.
Jackie quickly distinguished herself as a dedicated, disciplined boxer and above all with extraordinary boxing skills, that led her to be noticed by Lifelong WBC President Don José Sulaimán and the champion Erik Morales. Jackie contested the WBC´s first women world title World Boxing Championship. On that Historic night of May 30, 2005, Jackie Nava defeated the experienced Leona Brown.
“I think that when Erik and our beloved Don José told me about the fight, I did not fully contemplate what it meant. I really didn’t have much experience, but I fought with all my heart and passion as I have done throughout my career. They gave me a unique opportunity, that forever and forever changed the course of my life.
“ It was a very special night, in which I crystallized my father’s philosophy of life. He always wanted a boy, -I think that’s why I liked contact sports. However, he always supported me, and inspired me to become the best. It was a day of many mixed emotions because I was happy to have won, but I also missed my dad very much, he passed away in 2000. He never saw me fighting, but all my fights were always dedicated to him, because he has been my inspiration.”
It was inevitable and apt to remember the two fights with Ana María Torres, who Jackie recognizes as one of the very best Mexican fighters.
Of the fighters who have been inspiration for her, Jackie said that the main one is Erik Morales, as well as Julio César Chávez, Rafael Márquez and Manny Pacquiao.
The fight with Mariana Juárez was also an important topic in the conversation, because as we all know, this mega bout was planned for May 9th. However everything is on hold due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
Jackie is looking forward to being back in action on July 4 in a closed-door evening organized by Zanfer promotions against Estrella Valverde whom she considers a dangerous rival.
Jackie was discerning in her choice of Boxing qualities that go to make up the ideal boxer. They are:
Power: Ana María Torres
Jab: Mariana Juárez
Defense: Alicia Ashley
Speed: Katie Tylor
Heart: Jasmine Rivas
IQ Boxing: Katie Tylor
