WBC Special review of the Sam Eggignton vs Lee Cutler
The WBC received a formal appeal from Lee Cutler with regards to the result from his fight against Sam Eggignton for the WBC International title contested in Birmingham this past friday April 24.
The WBC received from team Cutler a short clip in which the replay shows a cut opening on Eggignton left eye which was the basis to begin a thorough review.
WBC appointed a review panel which reviewed the complete fight, the supervisors report from Charlie Giles and the additional facts and testimonies from both sides as well as the ruling from the BBBC.
The conclusion from the panel is the following :
The original cut was confirmed by the referee to have been caused by a legal punch.
The fight was tough with multiple accidental head clashes
The cut was worsened by at least one accidental head clash
The referee acknowledged the accidental head clash
The referee brought Cutler for a doctor assessment who indicated the cut was dangerous and severe enough to stop the contest which the referee accepted
The official result was a technical decision in favor of the fighter who was ahead on the scorecards
WBC Championship rules:
Accidental Injury. When a boxer suffers a cut, abrasion, or excessive swelling due to a headbutt, elbow, etc., whether accidental or unintentional.
If the fight cannot continue:
* No points will be deducted.
Technical draw if it occurs before the start of the fifth round.
Technical decision, according to the scorecards, if it occurs after the start of the fifth round.
The WBC chart of possible results confirms the rule and the correct handling of this specific situation
Legal punch followed by accidental head butt results in a technical decision.
The WBC International committee confirms the result of Sam Eggignton as new champion.
Eggignton must produce a medical report to confirm his condition.
The WBC hereby orders a direct rematch between new champion Eggington and Cutler.
