We have received the very sad news of the death of former world champion Roger Mayweather at age of 58.
Roger, originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, won world titles in two divisions, Super Featherweight and Lightweight. The first, the super featherweight crown, he won by defeating Puerto Rican Samuel Serrano in 1983.
The second, the WBC superlight, conquered it by defeating Mexican René Arredondo, in 1987, when he knocked him down three times in the sixth round so the referee decreed a technical knockout victory. Roger made four successful defenses of his belt before losing it to mighty Mexican Julio César Chávez in 1989.
In addition to being an electrifying fighter, he was instrumental and crucial in training plus guiding his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s successful career, since his debut in 1996.
The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaimán Saldívar, send Roger’s family and friends their deepest condolences, at this moment intertwined with great sorrow. But also indelible memories of a wonderful, dedicated, talented and courageous champion, who`ll forever be the pride of Boxing.
Rest In Peace Dear Champion.
Descansa en Paz campeón
