During the traditional “Martes de Cafe” WBC press conference that were at the facilities of the Federal Protection Service in Mexico City, Erika Ortiz’s words inspired us, educated us and showed us that resilience and courage are our best weapons to overcome any adversity, that cancer is not a sentence, because if it is detected in time we can ring the bell of victory.
This is the message that the WBC and the IOC are launching today, in the month of the fight against breast cancer.
Raising awareness and generating awareness is the objective of the WBC, who dresses in pink and joins the fight against breast cancer, in the month dedicated to raising awareness and celebrated around the world every October.
As explained by Erika Ortiz, general director of the International Cancer Center Foundation, this has grown alarmingly in recent years, women between 20 and 55 years old have lost their fight, most of the time because this cancer was not detected in time.
Unfortunately, fear and ignorance are our worst enemies, two factors that can paralyze us and put us at risk, because it is imperative to remember that early diagnosis saves lives, since it has been shown that 95% of detected cases ARE CURED.
October is the month dedicated to breast cancer, which does not respect race, age or social status and that causes the death of more than 20 women a day in Mexico alone.
Erika also explained that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, both in developed and developing countries, and that it does not respect age or social status, but she also clarified that men can also suffer from it.
At this point, the director of WBC Cares in Mexico, Christiane Manzur, was clear in saying that every year the organization joins this awareness month with various activities that promote detection, which is why she urged all women to “self-examine” from the age of 20, since this exam helps you to know the normal structure of your breasts and discover any future abnormality that may appear.
She mentioned that early detection remains the cornerstone of the fight, since when it is detected early, it is possible to establish an adequate diagnosis and a specific treatment.
“At the WBC, we are committed and united to raise awareness about breast cancer and that is why since 2013 we have joined this campaign during all the fights held in the month of October where the entire boxing family wears the symbolic pink bow. In addition, our ring officials come to work with pink shirts. The organization, in collaboration with the prestigious glove brand Cleto Reyes, even unveiled a special edition of pink gloves that have been used since then in world title fights,” she said.
Christiane explained that over the years, the World Boxing Council has sought a way to get the message across to more women, so in the month of October, in addition to launching the aforementioned activations, the WBC has held various press conferences where our champions have joined as ambassadors of this noble task.
This month, the fight continues and like every year, the WBC has dressed in pink from the first day and so, we have traveled around the world joining this battle that belongs to them and… to all of us.
