A memorable Coffee Tuesday, Conference that inspired us, educated us and showed us that resilience and courage are our best weapons, as today the WBC and the International Cancer Center Foundation launched a strong and emotive message in the month of the fight against breast cancer.
Raising awareness and generating knowledge is the goal of the WBC, who dresses in pink and joins the fight against breast cancer, in the month dedicated to breast cancer awareness, which is honored around the world every October.
Erika Ortiz, general director of the International Oncology Center Foundation, explained this terrible has grown alarmingly in recent years, women between 20 and 55 years old have lost their fight, mostly by not detecting it in time.
And unfortunately, fear and often ignorance are our worst enemies, two factors that can paralyze us with indecision and put us at risk, since it is imperative to remember that early diagnosis saves lives, since it has been shown that 95% of the cases detected ARE CURED.
Breast cancer does not distinguish between race, age or social status and it causes the death of 20 women a day in Mexico alone,
Dr. Carolina Vaisman, National Director of the Genomic Unit of the Cancer Center, explained that breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, both in developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries, its incidence has increased steadily in recent years due to increased life expectancy and urbanization. However, it is important to clarify that men can also suffer from it.
However, thanks to advances in the field of genomic medicine applied in oncology, precision in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment is possible.
The use of genomic biomarkers in cancers allows patients to be individualized and treatment to be more focused and defined benefit for each of them. Genomic testing gives physicians greater clarity and confidence in making therapeutic decisions that will positively impact their patients’ quality of life.
Alejandra Barrón, director of Volunteering International Cancer Center Foundation and Rebeca Izquierdo, shared their testimonies of what their diagnosis was like, their treatment and how difficult this struggle was for them; However, both were clear in saying that a cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence, it is a war, but a war that can be won, and they are proof of this.
Elizabeth Reyes, general director of Industrias Reyes, who shared with the attendees the death of her mother, her grandmother and some of her aunts, all of them victims of breast cancer, therefore, for Elizabeth it is of utmost importance raise awareness and carry out strong prevention campaigns, encouraging self-exploration and also being messengers for other women.
At the WBC we want to be part of this battle and encourage all women to “self-examine” from the age of 20, since this exam helps you know the normal structure of your breasts and discover any future anomalies that may appear. It is important to mention that early detection continues to be the cornerstone of the fight against this disease, since when it is detected early, it is possible to establish an adequate diagnosis and specific treatment.
How to do self-exploration?
Standing in front of the mirror, notice any changes in the look and feel of your breast, such as lumps, difference in size, or discharge, then place your right hand behind the back of your neck and with the pads of the middle three fingers. With your left hand, firmly palpate your right breast, making small circular movements up and down. Make sure to cover the entire surface of the breast. Repeat the same steps, but time on the other side.
Christiane Manzur, director of WBC Cares Mexico, said that at the World Boxing Council, we are committed and united to raise awareness about this illness and that is why since 2013 we have joined this campaign during all the events held in the month of October. where the entire boxing family wears the symbolic pink bow, in addition, our ring officials show up to work with pink shirts, even the organization in collaboration with the prestigious glove brand Cleto Reyes unveiled a special edition of pink gloves that have been used since then in women’s title fights because the use of technology was applied to them that protects them as if they were made in 12 pound models even though they are 10 pounds.
Throughout these years, the World Boxing Council has sought a way to get the message to more women, which is why, in the month of October, in addition to launching the aforementioned activations, the organization has held various conferences press where our champions have joined as ambassadors of this noble task.
“Your struggle inspires us to never give up and to always move forward in every adversity.”
This month, the fight continues and like every year, the WBC has dressed in pink from day one and thus, we have gone around the world joining this battle that is theirs, theirs and for all of us.
