The WBC Boxing Grand Prix, a decades-long vision of WBC Life President Don José Sulaimán, became a reality in April, thanks to the support of Riyadh Season and His Excellency, Turki Alalshikh.
This innovative tournament will return with its second round of fights on June 20 and 21, from the Global Theatre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and will be streamed live on http://DAZN.com/wbc
The remaining 64 participants will compete in four weight divisions: featherweight, super lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight, with the goal of advancing to the next phase.
The first round of the tournament featured 128 prospects, who fought over four days. The winners of those bouts will return with the hope and aim to claim the José Sulaimán Trophy, awarded to the winner of each division.
The 32 bouts are scheduled for six rounds each. Just as in the first round.
There will be a confirmed winner in each bout. If necessary, tiebreaker procedures will be implemented at the end of the six rounds. In addition to the mandatory 10-point system, judges must grade the winning boxer’s advantage for that round: C (close), M (moderate), D (decisive), or E (extreme).
Open scoring, a common practice in WBC-sanctioned international bouts, will be implemented.
Instant replay will be used to confirm decisions made in the ring or to immediately review any protests if an action is believed to have been overlooked.
In addition to the 10-second time signal and the final bell, a 30-second alarm will sound to motivate boxers to pick up the pace, especially in rounds perceived as close.
Green and gold corners will replace the traditional red and blue ones. Boxers will wear uniforms according to this color scheme, which reflects the WBC belt. All boxers are subject to random drug testing, as stipulated by the Clean Boxing Program in conjunction with VADA.
These are the exciting fights that will take place:
