In a tension-filled night at the SSE Arena, former Olympic medalist Michael Conlan suffered a painful split-decision loss to the undefeated Kevin Walsh, in what could be the final chapter of his professional career.
From the outset, something was not right with Conlan. His classic technical boxing, based on jab control and distance, looked tense, insecure, leaky and even fragile.
An early clash of heads opened a deep wound on his forehead, causing constant bleeding for nearly the entire fight. Later, another cut on his right eyelid further complicated the situation.
The Irishman, a medalist at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, fought under the pressure of being the local favorite, knowing that one more defeat could mean the end.
Kevin Walsh fought like a man with nothing to lose. The 33-year-old American was more aggressive, consistent, and determined. Although the bout lacked sustained action—with many feints and few clear punches—Walsh did enough to convince the judges.
The judges’ scorecards were 97-93 for Conlan, while two judges saw Walsh winning 96-94, sparking boos in Belfast… and celebrations in the visiting corner.
With the victory, Walsh not only maintains his undefeated record (20-0, 10 KOs) but also captured the WBC International Featherweight title.
