Title at stake: World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Flyweight World Championship (González’s Defense).
Location: Taegu, South Korea.
This fight was for the title that the Mexican Humberto “Chiquita” González had won in June of that year. The challenger was the legendary former Korean champion Jungkoo Chang, who was a local idol and sought to reclaim his crown.
The fight was a baptism of fire for Gonzalez in his opponent’s home country. “Chiquita” demonstrated technical superiority and punching power against Chang’s incessant attack and pressure. The Mexican severely punished his rival, even bringing Chang to the brink of a knockdown on several occasions, something few had achieved. González neutralized Chang’s aggression, and at the end of the 12 rounds, the judges awarded him the victory by unanimous decision.
Daniel Zaragoza vs. Paul Banke (December 9, 1991)
Result: Victory by Technical Knockout (TKO 12) for Daniel Zaragoza.
Title at stake: World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantamweight World Championship.
Location: Inglewood, California, U.S.A.
This was the highly anticipated rubber match between the legendary Mexican southpaw Daniel Zaragoza and the hard-hitting American Paul Banke. Banke had snatched the title from Zaragoza with a stunning technical knockout in 1990, making this rematch high-stakes.
On this occasion, Zaragoza showed up in his best technical and physical shape. From the opening bell, he used his jab and his mastery as a southpaw to neutralize Banke’s aggression. It was a tactical yet brutal fight. Zaragoza punished Banke’s face with precision and caused a cut that worsened as the rounds progressed. Finally, Zaragoza’s superiority and the accumulated punishment forced the referee to stop the fight in the 12th round, with Banke completely overwhelmed.
Jermain Taylor vs. Kassim Ouma (December 9, 2006)
Result: Victory by Decision (Dec 12) for Jermain Taylor.
Title at stake: World Boxing Council (WBC) Middleweight World Championship.
Location: North Little Rock, Arkansas, U.S.A.
The unified middleweight champion Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor returned to his home state of Arkansas to defend his title against the former junior middleweight champion, the Ugandan Kassim Ouma, known for his unorthodox, high-activity, and high-volume punching style.
Ouma lived up to expectations, proving to be a whirlwind of punches and movement. He kept Taylor under constant pressure and made him work every second. However, Taylor, being the bigger and naturally stronger man in the division, was more accurate and powerful with his shots. Although Ouma threw a greater volume of punches, Taylor connected the cleaner and more effective jabs and power punches, especially to the body. At the end of the 12 rounds, the judges saw Taylor as the clear winner by unanimous decision.
