This past Saturday, Tina “Tinny Tina” became the undisputed atomweight champion.
MBS Arena in Potsdam, Germany, was the venue where 2500 spectators lived the fight between “Tiny Tina” and Surimi Yamanaka.
The Japanese Yamanaka came to the bout undefeated and with the IBF crown. Rupprecht arrived with just one loss and the WBC and WBO atomweight belts.
After 10 rounds of grueling activity, the decision came down to the judges, who scored the fight 99-91, 95-95 and 96-95 to award the win and the undisputed title to Tina Rupprecht.
Tina became the first German boxer to become undisputed champion.
But “Tiny Tina’s” road was not an easy one.
She made her successful professional debut on December 7, 2013 by knocking out Helena Tosnerova. It only took her 3 more fights to get a title shot.
In November 2016 she won the WBC silver strawweight title. One fight later, she claimed the WBC interim strawweight championship winning by unanimous decision over Anne Sophie Da Costa.
After a successful defense of her crown, came the opportunity to become the definitive queen of her division in 2018.
In a 10 round war, she pulled out the victory over Venezuelan Niorkis Carreno by unanimous decision. A draw and 3 wins later, Tina would see her opponent’s hand rising for the first time.
In a bout with Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada, the German lost by judges’ decision. 90-100, 90-100 and 90-100 were the cards that gave the victory to the American.
It took a little over a year for “Tiny Tina” (who earned her nickname because of her 1.53 m height) to return to the ring.
January 13, 2024 was the date that saw the return of the current undisputed champion, only this time, she was fighting for the championship of a lower division, at atomweight.
This would be Fabiana Bytyqi’s fifth defense of the WBC world atom title when she met the German who in 10 rounds snatched the belt from her.
Her next fight would be for the WBO world atom championship. The Japanese Eri Matsuda was looking to defend her crown for the first time, but Rupprecht started strongly and won by unanimous decision.
Her last fight was this Saturday where she unified the titles of her division. Tina said that to close this chapter in the best way, she will travel to Japan.
