Romina “Bambita” Castán was ready to make her debut as the youngest professional boxer in the world. At just 12 years old and with 50 amateur victories, the World Boxing Council sought to stop her participation.
Mauricio Sulaimán President of the WBC, made the decision personally, as the age difference with her opponent, 21-year-old Guadalupe Medina, and the latter’s experience represented a danger to Romina’s integrity.
Originally from José Cardel, in La Antigua, Veracruz, Romina started boxing at age four and quickly gained qudos for her power, discipline, and charisma.
Sulaimán explained that he had discussions with Romina’s father, who insisted on allowing the fight. Even so, the leader remained firm.
Romina “Bambita” Castán and her father, Isaac, visited “Coffee Tuesday” to talk about the event.
Isaac Castán commented: “At first, we were disappointed because we wanted to break a Guinness World Record for being the youngest female professional boxer. But later, with a cooler head, we realized that we must continue the process so Romina can build her career.”
Mauricio Sulaimán said: “It was a difficult and tense moment, we understand that very well. Your daughter has a lot of potential and a bright future. You have the full support of the WBC, and I promise that we will support her with events in and outside of Mexico. We will look for a scholarship and more support for her, and we will accompany her in her career until she becomes a world champion. Romina is undoubtedly a very talented girl, but in this sport, she must let her body mature so that she is in a condition to face any opponent.”
Romina commented: “I am happy to be here and for the WBC’s support. At first, I was sad because I really wanted to make my debut, but I understand that there’s a time for everything. I know great things will come with the WBC.”
Mauricio concluded: “You need many years of practice, just like in any profession. For example, doctors study for many years to be experts in their field. You have to go step by step; we are going to support you from now on so that you become a great champion.”
