The International Secretary of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Marcos Arienti, has presented the WBC Postmortem Latin Champion Belt to Hugo´s wife, Eliana Juarez.
The ceremony was held in the city of Villa Constitución, in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the home city of Hugo Santillán. The delegation was Marcos Arienti and Gustavo Zacarías. It was welcomed by the Secretary of Government, Alejandro Longo, officials from the sports and youth areas, and the local reference, Osvaldo Boulan.
The belt, which was manufactured in Mexico, highlights Santillan as a Latin champion given that his last fight against the Uruguayan Eduardo Abreu ended in a draw.
“It is our way of recognizing his great life by paying homage to his children, so that they have a concrete memory of the great champion of life…their father,” Marcos Arienti said when making the presentation.
As approved by the WBC during its October convention in Cancun, the decision to provide a financial grant the family of deceased boxer Hugo Santillán.
Hugo Santillan was remembered with an affectionate and memorable tribute from those present that culminated with the words of thanks from his widow, Eliana Juárez, who was accompanied by their three small children: Yanet, Gianluca and Valentín Santillán.
Sra Juarez thanked “the World Boxing Council for the recognition. Because he deserved it, for his tireless struggle to be recognized worldwide, in this soport he loved so much.
Marcos Arienti thanked the authorities for “having opened their doors for this event”, and conveyed the “message of love and deepest condolences that Mauricio Sulaiman and all the Green and Gold Family of the World Council of Boxing send.
