With deep sorrow we express our profound sadness and deepest sympathy, upon learning about the death of Mr. José Abed Rouanett, vice president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and president of the Mexican Organization of International Automobile Racing (OMDAI MEXICO), as announced by Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA through its twitter account.
Don José Abed was always a fantastic example. A tireless promoter of Mexican sports, among many other spheres,. he was the instrumental driving force in making Mexico a venue for Formula 1, atop the world’s top motorsport echelon.
Close friend and compatriot of Don José Sulaimán, his friendship was reflected not only in sporting events but also in family life.
In the 1970s he was a driver of touring cars, modified cars, rallies and Formula Ford; he founded OMDAI in 1985. From 1986 to 1992 he was director of the organization of the Mexican Grand Prix.
His contribution to Mexican sports also reached soccer, being president of the Puebla club in 1996 and 1997.
The entire World Boxing Council family is in sorrow and send a hug to his family at this sad time, recalling so many marvelous and everlasting memories. We have lost A Great.
