This March 13, 2026, marks the fifth anniversary of the passing of one of the greatest men to ever lace up a pair of gloves: “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler.
Although the calendar shows that five years have gone by, for the WBC family and fans around the world, the void left by his departure, is felt with the same intensity as that day in March 2021.
Marvin Hagler was not just a boxer; he was the gold standard of the middleweight division. With a career spanning from 1973 to 1987, Hagler built a legendary record of 62 wins, with 52 knockouts, two draws, and only three losses (two of which were avenged).
His reign as the undisputed 160-pound champion between 1980 and 1987 stands as one of the most brilliant eras in the history of the sport. With 12 successful defenses, Hagler established a historic record: a 78% knockout ratio as an undisputed champion, a figure that remains the highest mark of all time in the category to this day.
For the WBC, Marvin was much more than his statistics. He was a beloved member of our family, whose presence lit up our World Conventions. We fondly remember his winning smile, his keen sense of humor, and that mischievous laugh that contrasted with the ferocity he displayed inside the ring.
Hagler embodied the values of the “Green and Gold”: a one-hundred-and-ten percent dedication to his craft, unwavering discipline in training, and a humanity that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His work ethic became a beacon for current generations of champions.
Today, five years after his departure, the boxing world pauses to honor his magnificent, marvelous and everlasting memory. Marvin Hagler will always be in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts—and, of course, forever etched in the history of boxing.
