Jackie “Princesa Azteca Nava,” concluded her illustrious twenty-one years career with a UD victory in front of her very own adoring fans at the Municipal Auditorium Fausto Gutierrez Moreno, in Tijuana with a UD win over Argentina`s Gloria Elena Yancaqueo to lift aloft the WBC super-bantamweight Diamond Belt. Like diamonds, Jackie is forever!
Jackie hangs up her gloves aged forty-two with a tremendous career of 39-4-4, 16KO`s. An eight times world champion in two divisions, the World Boxing Council`s first woman champion, a boxing pioneer and an inspiration to all young boxers be they women or men. In addition to her ring exploits, Jackie is a perceptive commentator, boxing mentor, politician, wife and a mother. She has a Degree in Agriculture from the Instituto Technologico de Tijuana and was elected to Mexico`s Chamber of Deputies.
Gloria`s record which now stands at 10-11-3, 3 KO`s appears modest on paper. But it belies the eight years age difference and it`s evident that she trained really hard for the fight of her life. She fought like a tigress!
From the start, Gloria established a firm left jab and her overhead right was both powerful and dangerous throughout. It took Jackie until round three to find her rhythm and sharpness homing in on the target with long range punches raining down upon her shorter opponent. Gloria had definitely felt the power, because she started moving around the ring, circling and evading via mobility.
From the half way point, Jackie`s superior fitness and vast experience became a marked and telling factor, yet she still had to be wary of hard counter rights from Gloria, who was spirited, and even resisted her corner applying copious daubs of grease to her brows between round seven and eight. Jackie started letting her hands go and the crowd was adoringly chanting her name willing her home again and again. It just had to be.
At the start of round ten, the Great Julio Cesar Chavez who was commentating for TV Azteca got to his feet and applauded Jackie. A touching, poignant and personal tribute from one Superstar to another, amidst a cascade of rapture. It was a supreme moment of Boxing.
Jackie winced after a resounding clash of heads, which badly swelled her left brow. She fought flat out for those last two minutes and won with scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93. Technically superior, Jackie was not as energized and insistent as before. Time slows us all. Gloria was the first person to applaud Jackie when the result was announced. They embraced and exchanged admiring words. Sportswomanship at its absolute best and an example to us all. There will never be another night quite like it!
