The NABF opened its 53rd annual convention at the grand Caribe Royale hotel and resort in Orlando, Florida.
After registration opened for delegates at the convention center, the executive board held a closed-door meeting in the Caribe VI room.
President Duane Ford welcomed board members and thanked WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán, who is vice president of the NABF, for all the support the body has offered to the NABF over the years. “I think of Mauricio as my son and we could not have the success we have had in the NABF without the support of him and the WBC!”
President Ford reviewed the agenda for the next two days, including guest speakers, topics, as well as ring officials, training and testing.
The possibility of implementing a stronger NABF presence on various social media platforms as the WBC has done was discussed.
NABF member and judge Michelle Ponich will lead that effort. Ideas for NABF social media accounts include profiling members and champions on a monthly basis.
Board member and supervisor Joanna Aguilar also raised the idea of implementing monthly meetings for fight supervisors in an effort to form a more coherent understanding of the expectations and responsibilities in the supervisory role.
President Ford also discussed the idea of appointing a NABF representative to the WBC Amateur committee.
A surprise special attendee was WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo
