The César of México as the Empire strikes back

Julio Cesar Chavez who thrilled the World with an unbeaten reign of more than a decade involving thirty seven title fights, including the most dramatic last gasp KO victory of all time, has been given a magnificent tribute by the World Boxing Council at its 57Th Convention, at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Cancun.

El Gran Campion was presented with the Mayan Belt, for his dramatic,  dazzling career which is never likely to be reached, equaled or bettered.  Beating, bettering or battering such brilliance is most unlikely.

A trip down memory lane as Mario “Azabache” Martinez who Julio overwhelmed for the WBC super featherweight title, the first on his glory list, came up to the stage to embrace his rival and long time friend, reminding the audience it’s no disgrace to give your all and lose to a great champion.

Then the superb idol of Puerto Rico, Juan Laporte who went the distance to lose to Julio was at hand to offer his congratulations with  a substantial bear hug.

Legendary Promoter Don King who reminded the superstar, who he insists is like a son to him that he became a champion of the people…”VIVA MEXICOOOO”

‘’I’m proud, pleased and honored and pleased for Julio. I love you!’

Twice rival in that golden era, Oscar De La Hoya, knelt before the throne on which Julio was sitting, to peals and gales  of laughter saying If Julio had been five years younger back then when they’d clashed, he Oscar would have been defeated.

Julio’s famous capacity for calm focus and concentration fluttered and faltered with surprise but accompanied by the happiest smile,  as his Mum cam he on to the stage to help with the presentation.  His first act when he hit the big time was to buy her a house.

The Great Julio Cesar Chavez.  Not one in a million,  rather one in one hundred and twenty four million!
