World Boxing Council Flyweight Champion, Japan’s Kenshiro Teraji, will fight Californian Ricardo Sandoval this Wednesday, July 30th, in the main event of a boxing card at the Yokohama Buntai in Yokohama, Japan.
The fight is organized by Teiken Promotions, led by legendary promoter Akihiko Honda, and will be broadcast on ESPN KO in Latin America and DAZN.com/wbc.
Teraji (25-1, 16 KOs) won the Japanese and OPBF titles in just eight fights. Shortly after, “The Amazing Boy” stepped on to the world stage and won the WBC title in May 2017, defeating Ganigan Lopez.
With that victory, Teraji significantly improved, defending his title eight times, including a rematch against Ganigan Lopez, whom he knocked out in two rounds. Pedro Guevara (majority decision), Milan Melindo (TKO7), and Jonathan Taconing (TKO4) also fell to an increasingly solid and active champion.
However, overconfidence took its toll when he returned too soon after contracting COVID-19, losing his undefeated record and title to compatriot Masamichi Yabuki by knockout in the tenth round in September 2021. Teraji returned with determination, avenging the loss with a third-round knockout six months later.
Subsequently, he secured the best victory of his career by stopping the undefeated Hiroto Kyoguchi (TKO7), unifying the WBC and WBA titles. He then defended his crowns against Anthony Olascuaga (TKO9), Hekkie Budler (TKO9), and Carlos Cañizales (majority decision).
The Kyoto boxer then moved up to flyweight, where he defeated former Nicaraguan world champion Cristofer Rosales (TKO11) for the vacant WBC title, and in March, he added the WBA title with a dramatic comeback that culminated in a knockout over fellow Japanese boxer Seigo Yuri Akui in the final round.
Sandoval (26-2, 18 KOs) began his professional career in Mexico in 2016. After an early loss, he bounced back by defeating Oscar Vasquez (UD8) and knocking out veteran Raymond Tabugon (KO7) before traveling to the United Kingdom and defeating Jay Harris.
“El Niño” Sandoval, 26, from California, took a risk against the lesser-known David Jimenez, losing by majority decision. Since then, the fighter promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions has strung together a six-fight winning streak, including knockout victories against former Nicaraguan world challenger Carlos Buitrago (RTD8) and former Puerto Rican light flyweight champion Angel Acosta (KO10).
Both fighters successfully made weight without issues. Kenshiro Teraji weighed in at 111.5 pounds, while Ricardo Sandoval tipped the scales at 111.75 pounds.
