The path toward absolute supremacy in women’s boxing returns to Australia. Matchroom Boxing officially announced that Australian star Skye Nicolson will defend her World Boxing Council interim junior featherweight title against New Zealand’s Mariah Turner on April 29th at the iconic Melbourne Pavilion.
This bout marks a lightning rod in Nicolson’s career, being the first time she headlines an event in her homeland. After losing her featherweight crown last March, Nicolson has bounced back with three consecutive victories, demonstrating a willpower evolution plus resolution in her punching power after returning to her natural 122 pounds.
“This is a huge moment for me. I’m thrilled to be coming home to defend my WBC title and my position as the mandatory challenger,” Nicolson stated. “My goal is to face the winner of the April 5th duel between Ellie Scotney and Mayelli Flores for the undisputed championship.”
Her opponent, Mariah Turner, arrives with an Impressive seven-fight winning streak and will move down from the featherweight division for this challenge. “This is the opportunity that dreams are made of,” affirmed Turner, who resides in Brisbane and will look to pull off the upset against the southpaw stylist. Promoter Eddie Hearn emphasized that this is the most exciting moment in the history of Australian boxing.
