Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington defeated Mateus Heita by decision to capture the interim WBC featherweight title at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Namibian Heita (14-1, 9 KOs) nicknamed The Beast, did his best, but it wasn’t enough to win, yet he offered feisty resistance that Carrington seemed cautious with tempering or tampering with at times. Neither boxer appeared in trouble at any point during a tactical battle that ESPN broadcast live.
The 27-year-old Carrington earned his place in the WBC featherweight title race lineup by winning the interim title. Stephen Fulton (23-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia holds the WBC 126-pound title, but Fulton is expected to challenge WBC 130-pound champion O’Shaquie Foster (23-3, 12 KOs) in his next fight.
Judge Steve Weisfeld declared the fight a shutout for Carrington (16-0, 9 KOs), who won 120-108 on his card. Judges Tom Carusone (119-109) and Mark Consentino (119-109) each scored 11 rounds for the former New York Golden Gloves champion. The opportunity for Green and Gold now beckons.
