Miguel “Alacran” Berchelt overwhelmed brave but outgunned Venezuelan Edixon “Cabeza de gato” Perez who stayed on his stool in his corner after a torrid seventh hell for leather round, in which he absorbed and wilted under a torrent and welter of crunching body punches and combos to the head which produced showers of sweat.
The lightweight fight was at the UAT gym in the Poliforo, in Beautiiful Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The lively, sporting and appreciative crowd, roared as Miguel was presented with the magnificent Reynosa Belt by the Mayor Carlos Victor Peña Ortiz and WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman.
Jubilant he said: “He was tough, but I wore him down and broke him down. Round seven was when I applied severe pressure with so many punches and I am delighted with this belt. Now I want to fight for the WBC Green and Gold lightweight belt and bring it home.”
In round one Edixon was attacking but getting speared by a tribe of rights from the longer armed Mexican. Round two they were feeling each other out with feints but then Miguel connected with a left hook to the body a right to the head and another left to the ribcage.
Edixon was fighting back in the third, but suddenly Miguel unleashed a barrage punctuated by a big right, which snapped back his opponent’s head.
By round four Edixon was open mouthed and shipping punishment, but he gritted his teeth, protected by his mouth guard and managed to weather the worsening, gathering and looming storm… until the seventh.
It was then that Miguel opened the floodgates and hit him with thunderclaps, lightning, torrents and everything bar the kitchen sink. Two lefts and then a right to the head, wobbled him and nearly put him down. He tried to fight back, but was visibly wilting under the sustained rain of blows.
The sweet sound of the bell and a full minute of rest, weren’t enough. He called it a day after a torrid night.
Contesting the WBC Youth flyweight belt, Sheyla Moreno Castillo and Brisa Sarahi Olivia went at it from the opening bell. With her pigtail purposefully bobbing, Sheyla was swinging for the stands, connecting to head and body, but taller southpaw Brisa countered with a solid left hook and a stinging right jab.
In round two Sheyla waded in with a fierce combination to the head but Brisa replied with a pinpoint left uppercut. Sheyla’s hands were faster yet both fighters opened up in the embers of round four. In the next round a big right left combination hurt Sheyla.
In the eighth and final Sheyla was fighting, hands low and head down. For the final twenty seconds they both unloaded every punch in the book on each other, like bible punchers. Both went at it and neither took one step back. It brought the crowd to their feet. Both had given their all and the judges scored it a draw.
Another star fight of this fabled night in a packed eleven fights card, was at super-lightweight, between David Moreno Potrero and lanky José Luis Vazquez.
David who was heavier handed got the better in most exchanges and often went toe to toe with José, negating his longer reach, backing him into the ropes and going to work.
While David was switch hitting, José prized himself out of close encounters and countered well. By the sixth, David was transforming it into a war of attrition, alternating the attack to body and head. Mutual respect and after a seventh of cool evasion and hot pursuit, David gently patted José on the tummy as the bell rang.,
They embraced before the eighth and final round and just after the bell rang David drove José to the ropes. Fierce exchanges followed. But the intensity of David’s work rate throughout deservedly won him the UD.
Great moments before the Berchelt headliner, with all time greats Julio Cesar Chavez, Carlos Zarate, Alfonso Zamora, Erik Morales, José Luis Castillo, Cristian Mijares and Johnny González, climbing into the ring, much to the delight of the crowd who cheered themselves hoarse.
An absolute fab fight night in Reynosa which will be long remembered.
