Mexican Alexandro “Peque” Santiago conquered the vacant World Boxing Council bantamweight title, by defeating Filipino legend Nonito Donaire by unanimous decision at the T-Mobile Arena, in Las Vegas.
Santiago dominated much of the fight, had a lot of initiative, and at the end of 12 rounds, he was awarded the decision by judges Max DeLuca (115-113), Chris Migliore (116-112) and Steve Weisfeld (116- 112).
The victory for Santiago also jolts a 16-0 streak that Donaire had built against Mexican fighters.
“I’m very happy. I have worked long and hard for this moment. And what more than fighting with the legend Nonito Donaire”, said Santiago, at the end of the fight, adding:
‘I told them that I would return as World Champion, and I did it for my girlfriend, my son, my parents, my brothers, and for all the family. There were no worries, I know that I have a good corner, and I am grateful to God for this result.”
