
One hundred and two years since Rocco Francis Marchegiano, better known as Rocky Marciano, was born on September 1, 1923 in Brockton, Massachusetts.
Marciano, in his career had several nicknames, The Brockton Blockbuster, The Rock From Brockton, The Rock (The Rock).
He fought heavyweight; Orthodox guard, his record was impressive: 49 fights won with 43 KO’s and no fight lost. His will to win was second to none!
He retired undefeated, being until today the only heavyweight boxing world champion who never experienced defeat.
He also remained undefeated in his days as a boxer in the army (1944-1946) when he was a brigade champion. Rocky Marciano had an impressive record of 43 knockouts, equal to 87.76% from his fights.
Rocky Marciano was World Heavyweight Champion from September 23, 1952 when he won the title with a classic round thirteen punch punch to KO Jersey Joe Walcott, until November 30, 1956, the day in which, at almost 33 years of age, announced his retirement. Dedicated to an extraordinary level of fitness, there was arguably no better conditioned heavyweight. Rocky was astutely guided by sage Coach Charlie Goldman.
Considered among the 10 best heavyweights in boxing history, he died on August 31, 1969 in a plane crash in Newton, Iowa, just one day before his forty sixth birthday and the World mourned.
