Linda Haywood, great-neice of legendary champion Jack Johnson, passed away on this day, one year ago.
Linda, a 62-year-old retired office worker and part-time seamstress, campaigned courageously, extensively and constantly, seeking a pardon for Jack Johnson, who was wrongly accused and convicted by authorities of transporting women across State lines for immoral purposes. The lady in question, was his second wife, Lucille Cameron. A clear case of outrageous, disgraceful and shameful racial discrimination.
On May 24, 2018, the World Boxing Council was present at the White House ceremony, in which then President of the United States Donald Trump granted Jack Johnson a posthumous pardon, 100 years after his wrongful conviction.
Linda was welcomed at the WBC Convention in 2018, in Kiev, Ukraine, where she offered a fascinating testimony about Jack Johnson and reiterated her gratitude to Don José Sulaimán and the WBC, who never gave up until this terrible injustice was rectified. One family helping another!
The World Boxing Council and our President Mauricio Sulaiman remember with great love and admiration, our dear friend Linda. who`ll always be revered as a fighter for justice. She saw it through to the triumphant end, clearing Jack Johnson`s name!
Rest In Peace Dear Linda.
