The WBC Boxing Grand Prix, the first world boxing championship in history, is in its second phase, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This tournament was created by the President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaimán, together with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, Councilor of the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia.
This world championship has five phases spread throughout the year, with the first phase beginning in April, the second in June, the third in August, the fourth in October, and the grand finale in December.
Boxers from four different weight classes participate in the WBC Boxing Grand Prix: featherweight, super lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. Each division will have two reserve boxers in case of injury or any other problem that may arise.
The winners of the WBC Boxing Grand Prix will receive a cash prize, a mandatory fight for the WBC Silver title in their respective divisions, and the spectacular “José Sulaimán” trophy.
This third stage will be held on Wednesday, August 13. On Tuesday the 12th, participants completed the weigh-in ceremony, registering the weight limit for their respective divisions. The WBC Tournament Competition Committee, in collaboration with the Middle East Boxing Commission and NAS Medical Limited, informed all boxers that there will be a weight limit at the weigh-in.
Boxers participating in the featherweight and super lightweight divisions were allowed a weight limit of two pounds over their weight class, and middleweights are allowed a limit of two and a half pounds over their weight class, due to the implications of the long journey to Saudi Arabia for most competitors.
