The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), via the Undersecretariat of the Penitentiary System, in coordination with the H. Professional Boxing Commission of Mexico City and the promoter Boxjab Fights, pulled off the first professional boxing card “Rounds for Freedom”, in the Mexico City Penitentiary.
The event was chaired by the Chief Commissioner Omar Reyes Colmenares, Undersecretary of the Penitentiary System, who thanked the attendance on behalf of the Master Commissioner General Pablo Vázquez Camacho, Secretary of Citizen Security, to the boxing card where people deprived of liberty debuted as boxers.
Also present were Ciro Nucci Smimmo, president of the Professional Boxing Commission of Mexico City; Miguel Ángel Gazque Velázquez, Treasurer of the same; Darío Hernández Sánchez, General Director of the Boxjab Fights promoter; Mr. Israel Sánchez Rojas, Executive Director of Prevention and Social Reintegration of the Penitentiary System; Mr. Guillermo Mandujano Rosillo, Director of the Mexico City Penitentiary; and Abel “Johnson” Cruz Quiroz, professional boxer.
The Undersecretary spoke about the people who at some point were deprived of their freedom and who now develop in this sport. An example that anything is possible, that effort and dedication always have a great achievement and a great end, such is the case of Abel “Jhonson” Cruz, Ulises Cejudo and Jonathan “Jony” Mendoza.
He added that the ring not only tests physical prowess, but also each individual’s ability to face their own demons, overcome their limitations and prove their worth.
He thanked the boxing stars who have always accompanied, not only in this event, but also to train, and have helped to professionalize boxing in Mexico City and in the Penitentiary System, Rafael “Bazooka” Limón, former Super Featherweight World Champion, to Irma “Torbellino” García, World Champion, to Juan “Elegante” Martínez, Silver Champion, Anabel “Avispa” Ortiz, former Strawweight World Champion, to Alberto “Alacrán” Ruiz, former International Lightweight Champion, to Luis “Cotto” Vidales , former National Super Lightweight Champion, Cristian Urrutia, WBC International Champion, Dante Cruz Cardón, International Champion and Israel Rodríguez Picazo, former WBA Champion.
Thus, in a festive atmosphere, the singer and artist Eduardo Capetillo sang the National Anthem to give rise to the euphoria of each of the 10 fights that took place, between applause, hooks and jabs, at the end of each match of the debutants, ” Cacho” Segura, “Dil” Segura, Miguel Zavaleta, Cristian Martinez, Juan “Moy” Espinoza, Yassier Morales and “Panda” Coronilla, received their license from the H. Professional Boxing Commission, from Ciro Nucci Smimmo.
At the end, the teams, family and friends of the boxers congratulated them and had time to talk and enjoy the historic moment that took place in the Mexico City Penitentiary and marked an unprecedented event.
This event is not only about of fights in the ring but of second chances for new hopes and the possibility of starting over, with the mention that the next Boxing Tournament Guadalupano Inter Reclusorios 2024 will have six sponsors.
With these actions, the Secretariat of Citizen Security reaffirms its commitment to reinforce the guiding axes of social reintegration access, included in article 18 of the Mexican Constitution, among them is sport, within an environment of healthy competition, camaraderie and brotherhood, which favors family unity to reduce recidivism.
