Former champion Alexander Povetkin flattened Dillian Whyte with a massive left in the fifth round for a stunning KO victory, winning the World Boxing Council Interim heavyweight Championship, at Matchroom Fight Camp in Brentwood, Essex, UK.
Povetkin came back from the brink, to land a considerable surprise, having been knocked down twice in the fourth round. The fight appeared to be a slam dunk for Whyte. He was dominating the veteran Russian, who seemed to be teetering on the brink of defeat. But, appearances can be deceiving, especially in heavyweight boxing, where one blockbuster punch can prove the leveler, countermanding and canceling out everything else out!
In the fifth round Alexander came out more calculating, trying to counter Whyte. When Whyte over extended and missed with a flailing right hand, Povetkin swiveled and landed a mighty left uppercut that dropped an unconscious Whyte, prone to the canvas.
There was not even a count. The referee immediately stopped the fight. With this extraordinary applecart victory involving a sparkler, Povetkin raises aloft the WBC Diamond belt. Whyte is left to recoup, and is asking for a rematch, trying to put things right.
