On this day in history, Gonzalez upsets Kelley to win WBC crown

Alejandro Gonzalez won the WBC featherweight title after handing Kevin Kelley his first defeat in 42 fights.

The Mexican challenger dropped Kelley in the sixth but was floored in the eighth in a slugfest in San Antonio, Texas.

Gonzalez battered Kelley in the 10th, sending his mouthpiece flying before the bell sounded.

The American, with both eyes swollen shut, was told by his corner; “The fight’s over. There’s always tomorrow.”
