On this day in history, Fullmer dethrones ring legend Robinson
January 2, 1957
Gene Fullmer upset Sugar Ray Robinson to win the world middleweight title.
Robinson was floored in the seventh round before losing a unanimous decision in only his fifth defeat in 147 fights.
Fulmer was knocked out in the rematch but later regained the title and made seven defenses, including two against Robinson, retaining the crown via a draw in 1960 and on points in their final meeting three months later.
