Joe Louis retained his world heavyweight crown with a controversial decision over Jersey Joe Walcott. The champion survived two knockdowns in a split-decision which was booed by the Madison Square Garden crowd. Louis settled the rematch six months later with a knockout, making history with his 25th and final defense.
