On This Day in Boxing History… March 19th

1972 – In a clash that paralyzed Mexico, Rafael Herrera pulled off a massive upset by knocking out the legendary Rubén “Púas” Olivares in 8 rounds at the Plaza de Toros in Naucalpan, State of Mexico. With this victory, Herrera snatched the WBC Bantamweight world title from Olivares, marking a historic milestone for Mexican boxing.

1989 – South Korea’s Yul-Woo Lee conquered the WBC Light Flyweight world championship by stopping the experienced Mexican veteran Germán Torres via 9th-round TKO. The bout took place in the city of Taejon, South Korea.

1999 – In one of the most controversial decisions in heavyweight history, Britain’s Lennox Lewis and America’s Evander Holyfield fought to a 12-round draw at Madison Square Garden in New York. Total supremacy in the heavyweight division was on the line in this epic battle.

2011 – In Cologne, Germany, Ukraine’s Vitali Klitschko successfully defended his WBC Heavyweight crown by defeating Cuba’s Odlanier Solís via 1st-round TKO. The fight ended after a strike from Vitali led to a knee injury for the challenger.

2022 – In an electrifying rematch held in Kyoto, Japan, Kenshiro Teraji reclaimed his elite status by knocking out Masamichi Yabuki in just three rounds. With this dominant performance, Kenshiro recaptured the WBC Light Flyweight world title.
