On This Day in Boxing… April 1st

1976.- Puerto Rican Alfredo “Salsero” Escalera showcased his power in the Far East by knocking out Japan’s Shinji Yamabe in the sixth round in Nara, Japan. With this victory, Escalera successfully defended his WBC World Super Featherweight title.

1995.- At the Buffalo Bill’s Star Arena in Stateline, Nevada, the legendary Ricardo “Finito” López delivered another masterclass in technical boxing, defending his WBC World Strawweight title by knocking out Filipino Andy Tabanas in eight rounds.

2017.- Latvia’s Mairis Briedis made history for his country by defeating the experienced German Marco Huck via unanimous decision in Dortmund, Germany. With this win, Briedis captured the then-vacant WBC World Cruiserweight title.
