Former World Boxing Council light heavyweight champion Ukrainian Oleksandr Gvozdyk announces his retirement from boxing at 33 years old.
This is confirmed by the fighter’s manager Egis Klimas, an ESPN interview Steve Kim.
Gvozdyk (17-1, 14 knockouts) walks away from the ring to seek business opportunities.
“He is a very smart guy, so he thinks it will be difficult to do business and box at the same time,” said Klimas. “Therefore, you must dedicate 100% to boxing or business. So he decided to do that.”
Klimas insists that Gvozdyk’s decision had nothing to do with his loss to Artur Beterbiev last October.
The former 2012 Olympic bronze medalist dethroned Adonis Stevenson in 11 rounds in December 2018, coached by Teddy Atlas.
Gvozdyk was promoted by Top Rank throughout his professional career.
“It has been a pleasure for us to have promoted Oleksandr Gvozdyk, who not only proved himself to be a great fighter, but is also one of the smartest boxers we have had the pleasure of promoting,” said Bob Arum of Top Rank.
The WBC wishes Oleksandr a great success in his life and in his future business plans.
