The fight for the WBC vacant super flyweight title on Saturday goes ahead but with a different opponent for Carlos Cuadras.
Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (50-5-1, 43 KO`s) has tested positive for covid 19 and can`t compete. So, 22-year-old Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (14-0,10 KO`s), who was scheduled to fight on the undercard on the same venue in Phoenix, Arizona, for the WBC USNBC flyweight title against Fernando Diaz, has agreed to step up and fight Cuadras (39-4-1,27 KO`s).
Southpaw Rodriguez, who`s pro debut was in 2017, is undefeated. As an amateur, he won the US National Youth Championships in 2015 and 2016. He also won a silver medal in the 2016 US junior open Tournament.
The curse of covid has already postponed the much anticipated trilogy between Juan Francisco Estrada (42-3,28 KO`s) and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KO`s). WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez (18-1, 14 KO`s) will now fight Chocolatito on that date of March 5th. The venue will be the Penchanga Arena, in San Diego.
Cuadras won the title against Sor Rungvisai via a technical UD, after a clash of heads severely cut him over the left eye. After six successful defenses, he lost the title against Estrada via a UD.
