Former world champion Luis Nery defeated Sonora-born American Carlos Castro by split decision to win the World Boxing Council Super Bantamweight Silver title in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Castro was competitive but a knock down he suffered via a massive left hook in the first round was an early power indication of ‘Panterita’ Nery, from Tijuana.
The fight turned into a game of strategies in the middle rounds, as both Castro (27-1, 12 KOs) and Mexico’s Nery (32-1, 24 KOs) shared the moments. In the end, Nery’s unorthodox defense, confidence and unerring accuracy proved to be the difference, as he got 96-93 and 95-94, while the third judge scored 95-94 for Castro.
Castro was competitive, but without a doubt the fall he suffered in the first round and follow up cascade proved decisive for ‘Panterita’.
“My experience was definitely a factor,” Nery said. “I already have three world title fights and have faced tougher opponents than him. I showed that tonight.
“I wanted to prove everyone that I’m not just about throwing power punches” Nery said. “If I want to fight and be tactical, I can do that too.”
“I knew I could knock him out, but I wanted to win by proving that I could box too. I tried to fight back and attack how I wanted.”
