The legendary British icon “Prince” Naseem Hamed, one of the most charismatic champions in the history of the sport, is back in the spotlight with the upcoming release of Giant.
The biographical film chronicles his meteoric rise under the tutelage of the inspirational trainer Brendan Ingle.
Starring Amir El-Masry as Hamed and Golden Globe winner Pierce Brosnan as Ingle, the film explores the complex relationship between the son of Yemeni immigrants and the coach who guided him from a storefront gym to global stardom.
Approaching his 52nd birthday, Hamed reflects on a career that “ignited British boxing.” With a unique style, low guard, and devastating power, Hamed became a global phenomenon.
“My goal was to capture the world’s imagination, and I did,” Hamed stated. “I don’t care what they say. I did it my way. I didn’t just get an opportunity; I created it.”
Despite his success, Hamed was often criticized for his arrogance, but the former featherweight king insists the critics never hindered him. He recalled his 1997 victory over Kevin Kelley at Madison Square Garden with particular pride:
“It was a defining fight. Everyone thought I would fail at the ‘Mecca of Boxing,’ but I passed with flying colors. It was incredibly satisfying.”
Hamed retired at 28 with a record of 36-1 (31 KOs) following his lone defeat to Marco Antonio Barrera. Unlike many fighters who struggle with life after the ring, Naseem appears fully fulfilled through his faith and his family.
