
Mourning following the passing of Women`s Boxing Pioneer Maria Jesus Rosa
Today we woke up to the very sad announcement of Maria Jesus Rosa`s death…She was the first Spanish woman world champion.
Maria Jesus Rosa died today aged forty four- a victim of cancer, which was diagnosed just a couple of months ago. This was reported by the Spanish Boxing Federation. In 2003, Maria made history becoming light flyweight champion by defeating Terri Moss, from USA.
The boxing family will always revere Maria Jesus with great love, affection and respect. She was a boxer who fought for and established new frontiers, working to achieve and guarantee the magnificent development of women’s boxing in Spain and throughout Europe.
Everyone at the World Boxing Council, and its President Mauricio Sulaimán, plus the whole Family of Boxing, salute Maria, her Family friends and legion of fans, paying their respects and applauding in heartfelt gratitude. Maria you will forever be remembered.
