David Benavidez The “Mexican Monster” retained his World Boxing Council interim super middleweight world belt, by defeating previously unbeaten former world champion, Demetrius Andrade.
It all ended after the torrid sixth round, in what had been expected to go the distance between undefeated elite fighters. But that was never to be.
Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) executed a dominant performance throughout the 6 rounds of the fight before Andrade’s corner called for the stoppage. In this way Andrade (32-1) suffered the first defeat of his career.
Benavidez had a pensive start, ceding the initial advantage to his opponent; However, after gleaning enough to start his offensive, he ruthlessly piled on the pressure, cornered him and sent him to the canvas in the fourth. From there on in, it was one way traffic.
The systematic onslaught continued in the same vein and in the sixth he forced Andrade’s corner decided to stop the actions.
Andrade’s mouth guard was dislodged and knocked out at the beginning and end of the round.
This was what the current interim WBC monarch commented at the end of the fight.
“I plan to consolidate myself as the dominant man that I am. This was a reminder for everyone to know who the real champion is at 168. My people want to see me against ‘Canelo’ and that’s what we want too.
“I became the youngest super middleweight champion in history. I am a two-time champion. Who wants to see David Benavídez against ‘Canelo’? Let’s do it!”.
In addition to this, the legendary Mike Tyson congratulated the fighter he dubbed the “Mexican Monster.”
