Milestone regal victory for ”King” Callum Walsh
In the co-feature to the Canelo/Crawford fight at the Allegiant Stadium las Vegas, ”King” Callum Walsh came of age and proved a point, by comprehensively defeating previously unbeaten fellow southpaw Fernando Vargas Jr by Unanimous Decision.
The six foot tall Irish sensation aged twenty four from Cork, showed bottle, fizz, savvy, guile, power and maturity, to ascend another rung of the ladder on the way to a world title bid. A crucial moment and a hurdle overcome in his career, as this was a battle of the undefeated. Somebody`s 0 had to go and Callum`s tally sheet remains pristine. Callum`s record is now 15-0, 11 KO`s. Fernando is now 17-1, 15 KO`s. Legendary International Boxing Hall of Fame Coach Freddie Roach was in Callum`s corner, calmly dispensing sage advise, while also legendary Fernando Sr was in Jr`s corner, imparting smart counselling with pearls of wisdom, in his ear.
The scoring after ten rounds, clearly demonstrated the quality and tangible effectiveness of Callum`s work and the way he applied it to gain top marks. In a class of his own, thanks to a brilliant and inspirational teacher guiding plus developing his natural talent. The Judges saw it: 99-91 twice and 100-90. Callum`s Promoter Tom Loeffler of 360 Promotions said: ”Whenever you can beat a young, undefeated fighter, namely Fernando Vargas Jr, who is a big puncher, whenever you can pitch a shut out and dominate the fight, you`ve got to give Calum a strong grade.
”I actually thought Callum could have been more aggressive, as we`ve seen him in some of the previous fights, when he starts out very fast, comes forward and drives his opponents back. He didn`t do that against Vargas, but I think that was because, Vargas was very confident and he has good power. So Callum was more prudent and cautious than we`ve seen in the past, yet he gained the win in such a dominant fashion, on such a big stage. It`s always a great thing for a career, and being so young.”
Callum inflicted, imparted and impacted a high volume of pinpoint, sinking body punches, which was particularly impressive. Tom said; ”Callum is a great body puncher and a lot of that comes from Freddie Roach. Those punches were his most effective tool. I was surprised that the Referee didn`t warn Vargas Jr more or take a point, for repeated low blows.
”Callum`s performance and at such a young age, shows maturity, especially fighting in front of the biggest boxing crowd we`ve seen for a long time. It was very loud in there, with a majority of Mexican fans there to support Canelo. The fact Callum was able to control Vargas the way he did was highly impressive to me.”
The defining character and significant nature of this victory is a milestone in Callum`s blossoming career. Tom stated: ”Fernando Vargas Jr was clearly rated the highest of any opponents that Callum has fought. This victory both in the ring and from a publicity standpoint really catapults Callum`s career to a different level.”
