A fresco night in Frisco, as Mikey Garcia fitted into larger shoes, to take a big step in the welterweight division, by defeating former world champion Jessie Vargas.
Physically taller, broader framed Vargas dominated the first rounds, however, as the little and large contest developed, he was sent to the canvas from a hard left right combination, during the fifth round, getting up with a rueful grin accompanied with a free flowing nose bleed. And from that point on, the fight leaned in favor of the shorter Oxnard fighter.
With increasing frequency Mikey was cutting the distance and landing powerful downward trajectory rights. Jessie became a trifle ragged, as the punches found a home on him, but tried with some success to use height and reach, in order to fend off and evade the full brunt of the onslaught.
In this way, Mikey returned to the path of triumph, after being defeated a year ago by Errol Spence Jr., who attentively watched the fight from ringside.
“I think I carried the weight a little better,” Garcia said. “That allowed me to perform better. I felt better. I was solid when I had to. He is a big man, you know? Jessie is a big man!”
Jessie showed the courage, determination and hallmark persistence that have always characterized him. However, Mikey’s cool and collected marksmanship were detached and accurately dispatched in markedly superior fashion on fight night.
So Mikey conquers the WBC Diamond Crown and proves that he is a worthy opponent in a division, crammed with talent.
