A sea of humanity with waves of green, white and red in Mexico`s giant Zocalo Plaza, as tens of thousands of people went through their boxing exercises and paces for a brisk half an hour, scoring top marks during the biggest Boxing Class in history, with it fanning out to each of the Country`s thirty two States participating, to bolster the number to around a million.
Unforgettable moments with trim, slim and youthful President Claudia Sheinbaum sprinting over to the crowd to greet and embrace them, much to their joy and delight. On stage Julio Cesar Chavez and Oscar De La Hoya squaring up to each other, bursting into laughter and embracing. Roberto ”Manos” De Piedra joining them to complete a majestic trio, throwing jabs, swinging hooks, sweeping uppercuts, jogging on the spot in twenty seconds spurts, under a bright sunny sky, which had yet to turn scorching and broiling, well before high noon.
A woman on pink roller skates pirouetting in ever decreasing circles, good naturedly marshalling people clad in green, a bemused labrador type dog swiftly weaving through the barriers asap, to escape the massive crowd, a television cameraman pot shotting a security man with a rolled up ball of paper to convince him to…. move aside and out of the wide panning lens focus, in all the din and happy hullabaloo.
Various States and their Governors delivering boosting and bolstering welcoming messages of support, backed by massive homegrown classes on their own turf, beamed via three giants screens, before the action started. A huge floating boxing glove high in the sky and drones buzzing like busy bees, just over head height.
The main Master of Ceremonies was former world champion Jose Luis Bueno, who was a dynamo of inspiration and fireball of pent up energy, which was released in bursts. Also a hive of swarming activity from El Gran Campion JC Chavez. Attired in a maroon track suit, it`s hard to grasp he`s retired, as he looks in fabulous tip top shape. He and Stone-hands even did a bit of impromptu coaching on stage, trying to refine the rudimentary swipes of some of those beside them, and urging them to tuck their elbows in, as they returned their arms to by their sides.
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman leading a southpaw right jab and left hook session, as a tribute to Oscar De La Hoya and Marco Antonio by his side. Both are naturally left handed, but fought from a conventional stance in the ring. As Mauricio insisted: ”Absolutely, we also have to consider the naturally left handed. There are natural southpaws and southpaws in the ring are an important part of boxing and of course we had to do something for them.”
He also said: ”This event has been absolutely amazing and we will forever be grateful to our beautiful Mexico and its tremendous people. I don`t doubt it, I`m sure there will be another giant class but it will be Worldwide!”
Miguel Torruco The National Director of Sports Promotion and Well being in Mexico, took the White World Boxing Council Belt, which symbolizes Peace to all thirty two States which span the majestic Mexico Republic. He worked with President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Government and the World Boxing Council to make this all a tangible reality, pioneering new uncharted territory because something of this sheer scale has never been attempted and then triumphantly accomplished ever before.
But now…the sky and the entire Continent is the limit…and perhaps even further? Miguel enthused: ”We are so excited. Not only did Mexico make history but also worldwide because this is the first time one country makes something in common with one particular sport for peace and against addictions.
”The most important thing is the children and their future. We want to encourage them through sports and make them think about a positive way of life and of course to work out. We are going to work with the World Boxing Council and the United Nations, so maybe next Year we can have Mexico and the entire Continent of the Americas take part and some day the entire World.”
