Maxi Hughes, WBC Silver champion
Hughes became the WBC silver lightweight champion last weekend.
Last Friday, Maxi “Maximus” Hughes defeated Archie Sharp by unanimous decision, becoming the WBC champion for the second time in his career.
“Maximus” made his debut in 2010 against Johnny Greaves, whom he defeated. Nine fights without seeing his opponent’s hand raised gave him his first shot at a title, the BBBofC Central Arena Lightweight title, which he failed to win after losing on points to Scott Cardle.
His first shot at a WBC-endorsed championship came in 2015. The WBC International Super Featherweight title was vacant, and Hughes faced Martin Ward for it. Unfortunately, his corner pulled him out of the fight in the fifth round.
Five years later, with more experience, he defeated Viktor Kotochigov by unanimous decision to win the WBC International Lightweight title.
After becoming world champion, Hughes set his sights on becoming WBC champion, and although he lost to William “Camarón” Zepeda, he won the Silver Lightweight title.
In the post-fight interview, Maxi expressed his excitement at becoming WBC champion, arguing that he had been preparing for this his whole life.
Maxi Hughes could face the winner of the Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda bout scheduled for July 12 this year.
