Mauro Betti: WBC’s Vice President and Leader of the International Championship Administration

World Boxing Council Vice President Mauro Betti is a voice of reason and wisdom, respected throughout the World Boxing Council, and the entire Boxing World.

Mauro is also a man who believes in loyalty and consistency, explaining: “This year in Kazakhstan it will be my thirty sixth Annual Convention. In all this time, I`ve never missed one. Thirty-six consecutive years without missing a single edition of the Annual Congress. I`m proud of it!”

Why did you join the World Boxing Council and what year?

First time was during a WBC Annual Convention held in Venice (Italy – 1982)

What have you been able to achieve as the Chairman of the International Championship Committe? Which year were you appointed with this responsibility? 

 In 1986 , during the WBC Annual Convention we held in Aruba. Don José Sulaiman created the WBC International Championships (initially called WBC Junior World Championships). The chairman was late Antonio Sciarra and I was the secretary. Antonio died in 1993 during our Annual Convention in Las Vegas . I was there and Don José appointed me as new chairman. But, I have worked with the International Championships since 1986, as chairman since 1993.

When did you become a Governor and what have you been able to achieve in this job?

During the Annual Convention in Phuket (Thailand) 2004. I have always been very focused on the activity of the International Championships and only afterwards did I consider it appropriate to be part of the Board. However, I have always taken part in the most important meetings, obtaining the current position of Vice President. The WBC Board is very important. Once you are seated there, you participate in the most important topics and have a voice to democratically take the best decisions.

Why does the WBC inspire such tremendous and steadfast loyalty and dedication?

 I have always been a WBC man.  Only WBC and never thought to join a different organization.  For me professional boxing has always been green/gold.   I met many people who went up and down with different organizations.  Not me!

Why is it the finest and the best of the four sanctioning bodies/organizations?

The WBC is the only boxing organization in the world to take care of boxers.   Not just in words, but in deeds. The WBC takes care of many aspects of the boxer’s social life. Our funds have always and exclusively been used for the sake of boxers and for the improvement of the technical / medical conditions of boxing.
