Mauricio Sulaimán, President of the World Boxing Council, held a talk on the WBC University channel, where he addressed different topics about the current state of boxing and the challenges the sport faces.
One of the main points was the fight between Christian Mbilli and Lester Martínez, which he described as spectacular. He explained that an immediate rematch was ordered because both fighters delivered a bout worthy of repeating.
He also spoke about the historic showdown Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez vs Terence Crawford, highlighting the magnitude of the event and what it represented for world boxing. Along the same lines, he previewed details of the upcoming WBC Convention, which will not only emphasize why boxing is the greatest sport but will also pay tribute to those fighters who retired before, during, or after reaching the top.
Mauricio acknowledged that the sport faces challenges due to fragmentation among platforms and promoters, which confuses fans. He stressed the need for the industry to work together united to provide greater clarity and accessibility.
Another significant topic was the Boxing Grand Prix, a project representing the first worldwide competition of its kind, a dream born with his father, Don José Sulaimán, aimed at discovering the next boxing stars. He also discussed innovations like OTX, where an additional round is introduced in case of a draw, to add more excitement for fans.
The WBC President addressed the evolution of women’s boxing, emphasizing the organization’s efforts to create more opportunities and recognition for female fighters. He added that when unsafe or unregulated sporting practices emerge, the responsibility does not lie with the athletes but with those who promote them and those who consume them.
Finally, he reflected on persistent myths surrounding boxing, such as the misconception that it is a “fixed” or “dirty” sport, and stressed that any passionate fan—even someone like Cuauhtémoc Blanco—can become a reporter and help promote the sport.
